  • The Facts
    The Silent Killer:
    Sedentary Lifestyle

The term “sedentary lifestyle” has been defined experts as the absence of adequate physical activity.

It is known that the human body has evolved to support the physical activity patterns of our prehistoric ancestors and today despite the changes in the culture, diet, and demands of daily living, the human body continues to operate according to the genetic code laid down millennia ago.

Regular physical activity, sport and movement “in general” and physiological demands are elements extremely important to develop and maintain optimal structural health, functional health, and wellbeing for people of all ages.

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) our modern lifestyles have resulted in a significant increase in sedentary behaviors such as greater immobility and physical inactivity, i.e., we tend to spend most of our time sitting in a car, behind a desk, in front of the TV, etc., and this sedentary lifestyle can be directly linked to many physiological and social pathologies, such as, vascular diseases and chronic venous insufficiency.

Vascular diseases such as, Myocardial Infarction (MI) “heart attack”, Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) “strokes”, Peripheral Vascular Disorders, such as Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), are the number one cause of mortality and invalidity in the adult population in the Western world.

The WHO estimates physical inactivity to annually cause 1.9 million deaths worldwide and inadequate physical activity as one of the three major threats to modern health through non-communicable diseases.

What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), is a rather common circulatory disorder caused by weak, worn, or damaged valves in the veins of the legs, including poor return of blood from the feet and legs back to the heart, this, on a long term basis, may cause several severe conditions, such as, broken capillaries, varicose veins, thrombosis, and leg ulcerations.

    Which are the signs?

Signs of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) are usually shown through localized symptoms in the lower limbs:

  • Oedema – a build up of fluid that can cause the limbs to become puffy and swollen.
  • Heaviness
  • Tingling in the legs
  • Burning Pain
  • Prevention
  • Prevention is the best policy which involves educating oneself about the risk factors, how to diagnose and treat any symptoms in the early stages as well as to modify one’s lifestyle by:

  • Practicing at least 30 minutes a day of intensive exercise
  • Avoid being overweight and having poor nutrition habits.
  • Not wearing high heel shoes
  • Avoiding direct heat to the legs
  • Moderating the consumption of alcohol and caffeine
  • Obesity, inactivity, and aging can contribute to the weakening of, damage to, the valves. Valve damage can also occur if you have had a blood clot in your leg. Some people may have just inherited weak valves.
